Having kidney stones is a very common problem these days. In addition to being extremely painful, they cramp the appropriate functioning of your urinary system. Pain caused due to kidney stones can go uncontrollable most of the times. In some cases, a kidney stone can even block the whole urinary system, the condition which can be treated only with help of a surgery. Kidney stones develop largely due to the diet an individual consumes. Other reasons can be anywhere from heredity to environment to fluid intake habit, etc.
The procedure of formation of kidney stones due to diet is very simple. Body, after utilizing the required amount of food for tissue repair and energy, discards the waste to be carried through the bloodstream. This waste collects in kidneys and is excreted as urine. Certain foods end up in a waste that forms crystals; these crystals end up becoming stones in the kidneys. Calcium oxalate stones is one of the most common types of stones found in the kidney, with other being calcium phosphate, struvite, cystine, and uric acid. Calcium oxalate stones are formed because of eating foods rich in calcium and oxalate. It also gets triggered by oxalate produced by the body and the calcium that leaks from bones. One of the reasons that these stones do not dissolve is low pH of urine. Because these stones are so painful and problematic, it becomes very essential to prevent their formation (and reformation).
Patients already suffering from kidney stones, of any type, can prevent formation and recurrence of this painful condition by drinking huge amounts of water. Doctors advise to consume somewhere between 12 to 15 large glasses of water per day. More water helps the present kidney stones to dissolve, and prevents the formation of new ones. Also, water consumption needs to be increased during summers as a lot of it gets lost through sweat.
Furthermore, to avoid recurrence of kidney stones, patients should have a diet that is less in the contents that promote its formation. Reducing calcium oxalate-containing foods in the diet helps a lot. Your nutritionist or dietitian can help you to identify the food items containing calcium and oxalate. In case you are diagnosed with some other type of kidney stone, your doctor can let you know the foods to eat. It can also be treated surgically, if extremely problematic.Read more on Diet for kidney stones.
